Abstract

The analysis of mRNA expression patterns based on PCR amplification of cell-specific cDNA transcripts followed by capillary electrophoresis (CE) can be used to draw information about the composition of a biological trace regarding its cell types (blood, saliva, sperm, vaginal mucosa, menstrual and nasal secretions). Using DNA-RNA coextraction, this procedure can be performed independently of STR typing. In the case presented here, vaginal secretion of the female victim could be detected on the middle finger of the suspect, demonstrating that this method is particularly useful in sexual assault cases.
