Abstract

Background Investigation of the change in motor functions of children with DCD or Umschriebene Entwicklungsstorung motorischer Funktion (UEMF) after 24 units of physiotherapy on a neurophysiological basis or specified as Neurophysiological developmental therapy (NET). Objective To investigate whether neurophysiological-based physiotherapy (NET) is associated with a positive and long-lasting effect on coordination disorders in children with DCD. Method 10 children (4 girls, 6 boys, age: 6.42 [3.02] years) with a DCD diagnosis were treated with 24 units of NET (one or 2 units per week). Motor abilities were assessed 3 times: before, after, and 12 weeks post-treatment using the M-ABC 2. Results Substantial improvements in ball skills (percentile rank (PR) 5 -> 75), balance (PR 91 -> 99.9), overall motor abilities (PR 50 -> 99), and each child's most difficult subtask of the M-ABC 2 (PR 1 -> 50) from pre- to post-treatment. These improvements remained stable over the next 12 weeks and were independent of the children age and BMI. Conclusion The results provide a positive first impression of the benefits associated with NET on motor abilities in children with DCD.
