Abstract

Approximately 7 % of all pregnant women fly at least once during pregnancy. This poses questions and challenges for airlines, pregnant women and, last but not least, medical consultants with regard to fitness to fly. The aim of the present work is to map the range of transport conditions for pregnant women of the 25 largest airlines worldwide and the 4 largest airlines in Germany, to compare it with the guidelines of the IATA (International Air Transport Association) and to evaluate options for aeromedical examiners and to identify deficits. The 25 largest airlines in the world and the 4 largest German airlines were identified by Internet research and, in some cases, personal inquiries. The evaluation shows a wide range of transport guidelines that hardly follow general recommendations. The transport guidelines are therefore not suitable as a sovereign indicator of the fitness of a pregnant woman to fly. The consultation of a doctor experienced in aviation medicine, especially in later weeks of pregnancy, seems advisable based on the IATA guidelines.
