Abstract

A 28-year old woman went to see a dermatologist because of a vascular lesion on her cheek, which was cosmetically disturbing her. A laser therapy was suggested, explained and performed. The patient experienced severe pain immediately after laser therapy and subsequently a scar developed on the site of treatment, which the patient felt to be disfiguring. The Expert Committee for Medical Malpractice of the North Rhine Medical Association judged that the treatment was performed faulty. Overall, laser treatments belong to the risky therapeutic options in dermatology. The experts of the Committee for Medical Malpractice judged these treatments significantly more frequently faulty than other treatment options.
