Abstract

Background Therapeutic apheresis (TA) for pathogen elimination or immunomodulation is increasingly being used in the field of pediatrics. Objective In this review article the focus is on the specific features of practical implementation in the pediatric setting and the scientific evidence in this age group. Material and methods Literature search in PubMed with special attention to current treatment recommendations and guidelines. Results The TA is used in pediatrics for many indications, usually as part of a multimodal treatment. Most clinical practice recommendations on the use of TA are based on adult studies or smaller retrospective pediatric case series. Discussion Due to the use of TA in a multimodal setting and so far almost exclusively in retrospective studies, in most cases the success of treatment is difficult to assess. A prospective data collection represents an option for a better estimation of treatment success, also with respect to the individual modalities.
