Abstract

The number of aeromedical examination entities correlates only slightly with the total population of an EU country. The reason for this is the orientation of the density of aeromedical examiners (AME) to the country-specific air traffic volume, which is determined, for example, by geographical conditions (area states, islands, etc.) or the economic orientation (tourism) of a country. Therefore, a more adequate parameter for the density of aeromedical examination entities would be the number of pilot licenses. By far the largest number of examination entities can be found in France and Germany. The EU countries in Scandinavia have a notably high AME density. A high proportion of women among the AMEs can be found in the east and northeast where women are particularly well represented in other medical fields. In most of the rest of the European Union, the proportions of women are far behind the proportions of other medical specialties. The reasons for this are unclear.
