Abstract

Interdisciplinary treatment is needed in the management of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the working age population in industrialised countries. By asking brief questions, the internist can better assess various visual disorders that a patient may have. In this way, foggy vision can be distinguished from dark spots or black shadows. The internist can thus make better recommendations as to when presentation to the ophthalmologist should take place. When appropriate, prompt presentation to an ophthalmologist allows the necessary ophthalmological treatment to take place earlier in time-critical cases.
