Abstract

Chemistry teachers are often the only professionally trained role models for students when it comes to the safe handling of hazardous materials, equipment and chemical substances and thus have an impact beyond the classroom. In this respect, practical laboratory training of student teachers plays a key role in safe experimentation as a whole. To find out what exactly chemistry teacher students are able or should be able to do, safety-related experimental competencies were modelled and assessed by videotaped, hands-on performance. The results of the qualitative evaluation suggest that safety in the context of the experimental process is only possible through an interplay of several factors: Beyond the safe handling of substances and materials, safety knowledge, skills and information literacy to select and understand information in a correct way are necessary. However, fundamental to safe experimentation in the laboratory and thus later in school is an awareness of the importance of safety in the experimental process in general.
