Relegated to being a mere historical document, Ronald de Carvalho's volume Pequena historia da literatura brasileira (1919) has recently gained new readings. The movements that led to the abandonment and revitalization of Pequena historia will be illuminated here based on the analysis of excerpts from the work and documents that make up a panorama of its reception. The modernist aura that became attached to Ronald de Carvalho after his participation in the Week of Modern Art of 1922 extended to his Pequena historia, but this book was produced in the mold of the academic conservatism against which some of the members of the Week turned. This conservatism was not overcome in the author's revised edition, released posthumously in 1937, and does not seem to be a relevant fact in the latest reconsiderations of the work.
