Abstract

This article provides an overview of the role of nonsurgical treatment in common elbow injuries and presents the special features of selected conservative treatments. In the case of acute injuries (fractures, ligamentous elbow dislocations) or chronic pathologies (e.g., lateral/medial epicondylitis, elbow stiffness), a treatment algorithm should be worked out with the patient that takes into consideration both conservative and surgical treatment options. When taking into account the injury pattern and the individual needs of the patient, satisfying to excellent results can often be achieved with conservative treatment. The basis for acute injuries is early functional movement supported by physiotherapy without prolonged immobilization. In the case of chronic injuries, a variety of conservative treatment options are available, e.g., modifications in physical load, physiotherapeutic exercise, manual therapy, extracorporal shock wave therapy, massage therapy, anti-inflammatory oral and topical therapy, and local infiltrations.
