Abstract

The incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus are increasing in Germany and worldwide. About 500,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed every year. In Germany, more than 7 million people suffer from diabetes. Diabetes is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease and emergencies. Furthermore, because of the autonomic neuropathy and polyneuropathy and the associated changes in pain and sensitivity, patients with diabetes often present too late to their doctor or the hospital emergency department. This has significant prognostic implications. The following article provides an overview of cardiac emergencies in diabetes mellitus, their incidences, special symptoms, treatment options, and prognosis. The article focuses on the most common cardiac emergency diseases-acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, heart valve diseases, hypertension crisis, and cardiac arrhythmias. In addition, there are less life-threatening diseases that occur more frequently in diabetics and, due to their symptoms, can imitate acute cardiac emergencies, such as microcirculation disorders or endothelial dysfunction. These are also addressed due to the need for differential diagnosis.
