Abstract

This paper presents a new test instrument to measure situation-specific skills for planning language lessons of German (preservice) teachers for secondary schools. Three complex text vignettes providing the context of typical planning situations and succeeding test items relate to cognitive demands of lesson planning: content transformation, clarity of learning objectives, structuring the lesson, and pedagogical adaptivity. Using four samples (bachelor students, master students, teacher candidates, early career teachers), research questions on reliability and validity are focused. Findings provide evidence for a reliable one-dimensional measurement, and even the four cognitive demands can be measured through reliable subscales. With increasing teaching experience the four samples show better test performance, but only group means statistically differ between teacher candidates and early career teachers on the one hand and bachelor and master students on the other hand. Pedagogical content knowledge as measured via another test statistically influences planning competence, controlled for teaching experience. Implications of findings are discussed towards future research.
