Abstract

The recent paradigm shift in medical training legislation necessitates the establishment of improved and more practical teaching concepts in the final year (practical year, PJ) of medical studies in Germany. The new medical licensing requirements target a graduate profile that emphasizes the model of competence-based teaching and so-called entrustable professional activities (EPA). It is critical for prospective physicians to master key skills early on during specialty training, especially in the field of gynecology and obstetrics, to guarantee a high degree of patient safety. Both students and hospitals benefit from the incorporation of EPAs. Students benefit from sophisticated hands-on teaching that prepares them for their clinical duties, whereas hospitals can guarantee a better patient care and enhance the medical team by bringing in well-trained newcomers. In order to integrate EPAs into the practical year they must first be established and defined in terms of structure and content. Gynecology-specific EPAs have already been internationally developed; however, these can only be applied to medical studies in Germany to a limited extent. In this context large modifications are necessary. More resources for student supervision and guidance must be mobilized within the hospitals in order to enable the successful integration of EPAs into the clinical routine. These new teaching concepts should also boost the competency of young physicians in gynecology and obstetrics in their professional roles as well as strengthening a sense of responsibility and clinical practical skills.
