Abstract

AbstractLanguage
Sediments of the Upper Oligocene Enspel oilshale deposit were analysed by bulk and molecular organic geochemistry and isotope geochemistry aiming towards a precise identification of the sources of organic matter and the reconstruction of the paleoenvironmental conditions of Lake Enspel. From a 140 m sequence of lake sediments 102 samples were chosen for elemental analysis, Rock-Eval analysis and analysis of bulk organic carbon isotopic composition. A representative set of 24 samples was selected for detailed molecular investigations of the free extractable and ester-bound lipids. Additionally, compound specific carbon isotopic analysis was carried out on the aliphatics and carboxylic acids of selected samples. Elemental C/N ratios as well as bulk organic carbon isotopic data indicate mainly allochthonous terrestrial derived organic matter input. Conversely, Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed high HI and high S2/TOC ratios showing high hydrogen contents of the organic matter as it would normally be associated with algal organic matter. High C/N ratios reveal a good correlation with high HI values and high S2/TOC ratios which is in contrast with the expected low hydrogen content of terrigenous derived organic matter. An explanation is offered in the fractionation of terrigenous derived organic matter during transport into the lake leading to a preferential input of hydrogen-rich waxy leaf lipids into the lake sediments. Therefore, it can be shown that standard interpretation of Rock-Eval data should be applied carefully to diagenetically immature limnic sediments and can lead to misinterpretations. When this limitations are taken into account, Rock-Eval analysis is a suitable tool for fast organic matter typing in immature limnic sediments. Molecular lipid analysis confirms the preferentially terrigenous derived organic matter input by a predominance of long chained n-alkanes (nC27, 29, 31), n-carboxylic acids and n-alcohols (both nC26, 28, 30). Short chain lipids up to nC20 contribute only in a few samples significantly to the extractable lipid composition. For these samples, the ester-bound lipids also reveal a higher proportion of algal derived nC16 and nC18 carboxylic acids. In the sum of both extracts, all samples show a predominance of terrigenous derived lipids. The extraction of randomly selected individual leaves reveals no significant lipid pattern allowing for a taxonomical assignment of the sedimentary lipid distributions. However, the terrigenic origin of the long chained lipids is confirmed by the leaf lipid distributions. Additionally, the relative proportions of C27 to C29 stanols verify the allochthonous origin of the lipids and the occurrence of (alpha)- and (beta)-amyrin argues for the presence of angiosperm vegetation in the surrounding of the lake. In contrast to most parts of the lake sequence, the depth interval between 62.3 and 61.5 m core depth shows a strong predominance of the nC28 carboxylic acid accompanied by high concentrations of the corresponding nC27 alkane. This is interpreted as an almost monospecific input of a special floral element which temporarily dominates the surrounding vegetation. Compound specific carbon isotopic data of the nC28 carboxylic acids yield values around -20 per mill which is clearly within the range of C4 plant material. Therefore, the possibility of C4 plant occurrence within the lake catchment as early as in Oligocene times is discussed. Dinoflagellates have been identified as the predominant aquatic primary producers within several depth intervals as indicated by dinostanol and dinosterol concentrations up to 1500 microgram/g TOC. Additionally, significant contributions of diatoms or chrysophytes to the autochthonous bioproduction is indicated by high organic SiO2 contents and elevated concentrations of nC15 and nC17 alkanes. No proof for a significant contribution of cyanobacteria to the photosynthetic community was obtained. Aquatic macrophytes vegetation in shallow waters can be identified in several stages of the lake history by elevated concentrations of characteristic lipids in the nC20 to nC24 range. For these samples nC20 to nC24 lipid carbon-isotope values depleted by more than 6 per mill were encountered. Indications for microbial activity within the lake are given by the identification of a suite of hopanes and hopanoic acids. Based on their isotopic composition, 2(beta)-hopanes and 2(beta)-hopanoic acids can be attributed to methylotrophic organisms and indicate an active methanogenetic cycle within the Lake Enspel ecosystem. Furthermore, the comparably heavy carbon isotopic composition of the trishomohopanoic acid indicates photosynthetic bacterial activity within the water column. As a third bacterial consortium chemoautotrophic bacteria belonging to a "mid-water community" can be differentiated. Based on this results, a model of the organofacies evolution of Enspel lake is reconstructed.English
