Abstract

Atmospheric aerosol particles are important in many air pollution problems. A significant portion of their mass is composed of anorganic components like sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate supplemented by sodium and chloride within the maritime planetary boundary layer. The effects of aerosols are dependent on the phase state of the particles, their water content, and the partitioning of volatile components between the aerosol and vapor phases. For the determination of this properties a thermodynamic model of the system H+ - NH4+ - Na+ - SO4-- - NO3- - Cl- - H2O is parameterized and used to represent activity coefficients, equilibrium partial pressures of H2O, HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, and NH3 as well as saturation with respect to 26 solid phases (NaCl(cr), NaCl*2H2O(cr), Na2SO4(cr), Na2SO4*10H2O(cr), NaNO3*Na2SO4*H2O(cr), Na3H(SO4)2(cr), NaHSO4(cr), NaHSO4*H2O(cr), NaNH4SO4*2H2O(cr), NaNO3(cr), NH4Cl(cr), NH4NO3(cr), (NH4)2SO4(cr), (NH4)3H(SO4)2(cr), NH4HSO4(cr), (NH4)2SO4*2NH4NO3(cr), (NH4)2SO4*3NH4NO3(cr), H2SO4*H2O(cr), H2SO4*2H2O(cr), H2SO4*3H2O(cr), H2SO4*4H2O(cr), H2SO4*6,5H2O(cr), HNO3*H2O(cr), HNO3*2H2O(cr), HNO3*3H2O(cr), and HCl*3H2O(cr)). Enthalpies of formation of the complex salts NaNH4SO4*2H2O(cr) and Na2SO4*NaNO3*H2O(cr) are calculated. The model is valid for temperatures lower about 263.15 to 330 K and concentrations from infinite dilution to saturation with respect to the solid phases. For the sub-systems H+ - NH4+ - NO3- - SO4-- - H2O (system I) und H+ - NO3- - SO4-- - Cl- - H2O (system II) the area of validity is expanded to temperatures below 200 K and for system I to supersaturated solutions. For H2SO4 - H2O solutions the degree of dissociation of bisulfate is represented near the experimental uncertainty over wide temperature and concentration ranges. Values for the model parameters are determined from literature data for vapour pressures, osmotic coefficients, electromotive forces, degrees of dissociation of bisulfate, dissociation constants of NH3 as well as experimental determined calorimetric properties of aqueous solutions like enthalpy of dilution, enthalpy of solution, enthalpy of mixing and heat capacity. The high accuracy of the model is demonstrated by comparisions with experimental determined mean activity coefficients of HCl in HCl - Na2SO4 - H2O solutions, solubility measurements for the quarternary systems H+ - Na+ - Cl- - SO4-- - H2O, Na+ - NH4+ - Cl- - SO4-- - H2O, and Na+ - NH4+ - NO3- - SO4-- - H2O, as well as vapour pressure measurements of HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, and NH3.English
