Abstract

Diacritics have usually been viewed as marks that can be added to an alphabet ad libitum, in any arbitrary shape and for any function that is needed in a given language. This is not the case. Diacritics have a concrete ‘etymology’, which explains the relation between form and function just as etymologies for words explain the relation between signifier and signified. Specifically, diacritics can emerge in four ways: as iconic diacritics, from letters (or parts of letters), from deletion marks, or from disambiguation marks. However, in most cases diacritics are not created from scratch but borrowed from another language, which entails language contact, formal identity, and functional equivalence. (Straightforward functional shifts and formal evolutions are of course possible.)
