Abstract

In just a decade, between 2005 and 2015, mobile phone usage has become virtually ubiquitous in Bangladesh, reaching almost every village and corner of the country. Especially for the millions of migrant workers, this has lead to an unprecedented level of connectivity, sometimes dramatically changing the lives of migrants and their relatives and friends at places of origin. This study investigates how the advent of this mediated form of communication interacts with changes in the translocal practices and social structure of rural-to-urban migrants and their rural household members. The conceptual framework is based on position-practice relations, affordances and structuration theory. With a mixed-methods approach, the mediatization of communication is traced through changing practices, and the influences on social relations and the way how space and places are constituted: the simultaneity, translocality and individuality that mobile communication affords, is altering both local and translocal practices. Notable processes are the “quotidianization” of hence occasional and exceptional inter- and transactions over distance, and a re-regionalization of communicative practices―changes where interactions regularly “take place”. With these and other shifts, the mediatization of communication leads to considerable changes in the spatio-temporal fabric of migrants' local and translocal social space in Bangladesh.

Translated abstract:	Abstract Language In nur einem Jahrzehnt, zwischen 2005 und 2015, ist die Nutzung von Mobiltelefonen in Bangladesch praktisch allgegenwärtig geworden und hat fast jedes Dorf und jeden Winkel des Landes erreicht. Insbesondere für die Millionen von Wanderarbeitern hat dies zu einem bis dato beispiellosen Anstieg der Konnektivität geführt, die das Leben der Migranten und ihrer Verwandten an den Herkunftsorten mitunter dramatisch verändert. In dieser Studie wird untersucht, wie Mediatisierung der Kommunikation mit Veränderungen in den translokalen Praktiken und der sozialen Struktur von Land-Stadt-Migranten und ihren ländlichen Haushaltsmitgliedern zusammenhängt. Der konzeptionelle Rahmen basiert auf Positions-Praxis-Beziehungen, Affordanzen und der Strukturationstheorie. Mit einem Mixed-Methods-Ansatz wird die Mediatisierung der Kommunikation durch sich verändernde Praktiken nachgezeichnet, und die Einflüsse auf soziale Beziehungen und die Art und Weise, wie sich Raum und Orte konstituieren, untersucht: Die Gleichzeitigkeit, Translokalität und Individualität, die mobile Kommunikation ermöglicht, verändern sowohl lokale als auch translokale Praktiken. Bemerkenswerte Prozesse sind die "Veralltäglichung" bislang gelegentlicher und außergewöhnlicher Interaktionen und Transaktionen über große Entfernungen hinweg, sowie eine Re-Regionalisierung kommunikativer Praktiken—Veränderungen der räumlichen Bereiche, in denen Interaktionen regelmäßig stattfinden. Mit diesen und anderen Verschiebungen führt die Mediatisierung der Kommunikation zu bedeutenden Veränderungen im räumlich-zeitlichen Gefüge des lokalen und translokalen Sozialraums von Migrant*innen in Bangladesch.
